Too Early

How early is too early? I argue that "too early" is more a state of mind than a location in space-time marked by the vibration of an atom.

I typically wake about 4 AM. When the clock-radios firsts blares its unwelcome revelry of Christian talk, it is definitely too early. Many a morn, it is some type of guilt-induced inhibition due to the subject that prevents the poor radio's destruction. (That and the fact it would take effort in non-slumber land.) No, first revelry is always too early.

The whole process of being sucked from the warmth of t he comforter, serenity of dreamland and calm of nights retreat is one that borders on traumatic. However, the stress of economic survival is sufficient to drive off any foolish thoughts of hitting the snooze button for fortieth time. Reluctantly, I rise to face the day.

My fuzzy mind and I stumble off to the kitchen and seek my only friend, at least at this hour of too early; the coffee maker. In a language that one can only understand from decades of dependence, between gurgles, whooshes and pops of boiling and steaming water, you are reassured. "it will be OK" whispers your percolating friend. It is early but relief is due soon. Too early yields to too long as my body awaits caffeination.

Time now seems to move as slowly as a bad movie but, in this case fortunately, it is ceaseless. I may now indulge in my favorite synaptic stimulator. Instead, I get a mouthful of grounds. Now it has become too early again.

Disheartened, annoyed and aggravated, I am now more than awake and ready to just leave. I head for the bus and, in passing I shall grab coffee with some pocket change on the way. I depart and feel the outside spring air. Pleasant enough to venture off with only a knit cap and a sweat shirt, I stride off. These days rate high in my neighborhood. They are rather rare for a town that has weather best described as despair. None the less, the weather pushed the day from too early to simply early.

As I neared the gas station, I saw the prices; 2.79 a gallon. I was now looking forward to the bus ride. Simply morning moved to good morning. I was looking forward to some time with my devotional that I have on my pocket PC and reading some more of my book The Mind of GodThe Mind of God (a book on physics, philosophy, religion and the origin of the universe) and, signal willing, I can even read some of my feeds via bloglines.

I also had time to pen this draft, check e-mail and go over my to-do list. This is why I try for "too early" on a daily basis.
