Tid Bits Vol.1, No.11 - Will Windows fall to Spyware?

In my last Tid Bit blog, I ranted and raved about all the links I have discovered since I became addicted to pod casting. One of my favorite pod cast is Leo Laporte. Leo is "the tech guy" on WKFI 640 AM radio. He is very knowledgeable and helpful. I actually doubled back to just before Easter and have listened to almost every one of his pod casts.

Leo openly touts the Mac. He feels that Window OS is a mess. He is calling like it is. Even though I am a long time Windows user, I agree. One is foolish to argue with valid logic. Chris Pirillo who is also very knowledgeable and mentioned in his podcast that he is making the switch as well. Is Micro$oft finally going to loose to that company that always looses law suites to Apple Record?

Is the Teflon coated company that seems unable to even be beaten by the courts going to loose out? I think that it is eminent. I think it is inevitable. I am going to make the switch as soon as I have the capital.

Now Chris, Leo and I have been longtime windows users so why the sudden change of heart? First of all, I am speaking for myself only here. If you would like to find out how Chris, Leo or anyone else knows, check out their pod casts.

Second, it is not that sudden... Windows made some bad security decisions a long time back. They also would rather design software which mandates a bigger and faster machine rather than write code which is resource friendly.

I do not recall exactly when, but it has been at least two years since I built "Lycanthrus"; my multi-boot Linux/windows box. This box had four hard drives with the largest only being 20 gig and a 500 MHz CPU. It performed very well unless I chose to boot Windows, which made it move at glacial speed. I knew then that windows was not the best OS for all purposes. Linux, BeOS, and Atheos all had their strong suites. (Lycanthrus is now sitting in my girlfriend's basement waiting for me to have the time to rip him down and install a secondary IDE card and a TV card. Lycanthrus is then going to become a miniserver for me to experiment with remote computing on.)

Windows, however, has never been resource friendly. Moore's Law has always made it somewhat of mute point. I always managed to figured out how to make even their worse OS, Winblows ME, work on my resource deprived machines. I even managed to get ME to work on an old MMX lappy with only 32 meg of RAM. No that is not the issue with me.

It has also been common knowledge for some time that anyone working with audio and video recording/editing is a few sandwiches short of a picnic. The Mac rules in that area. It is the computer of choice for anything short of 3-D graphic, which is only due to the fact that there are better 3-D video cards available for the PC platform. I also remember reading that all of the special effects for the LOR movies were done on the Linux platform. I, however, still do all my audio work on a windows based system, which is a SoundBlaster m003 mobo tweaked to work with my MIDI and four track. So, I reckon, that is not the issue either.

So what is the issue? One word. Spy ware. It is that simple. The number one issue with Windblows is just that. I have, over the years, become very adept at keeping my machines clean and secure. The number one thing I get asked to help with from other windblows users is cleaning up infected machines. The reality is that one can keep a winblows machine clean but how much effort is too much?

Running three anti-spyware program, anti-virus and being behind a router all help but how much effort is too much? Lumpy can not be sure but he is sure that Gates and company have passed that mark. Lumpy will keep a few windblows machines but will be converting to Linux and, when funds are available, get a Mac.

CYA in CyberSpace,
Lumpy
