This is just a quick and dirty entry. I am putting it here just in case you haven't heard of "pingomatic". I somehow missed it until I heard Chris Pirillo mention it in an interview on his podcast show
It is a great service that pings as many as 14 different blog directories and indexes.
You can also enter their URL to ping them and they will ping the sources for you. The URL is http://rpc.pingomatic.com/

I was tempted to remove this service when I found out that it's run by the same guy as WordPress, but felt it unkind to judge one badly for the actions of another, as Pingomatic seems to be run by another person as well. It's a useful service, though their site's been having issues with pings lately due to, I suspect, a db issue.

If you've been having problems with Pingomatic you may want to try out PINGQueue (http://www.pingqueue.com/). It provides a similar service along with the ability to see your ping history and responses from the services the pings were echoed out to.
Full Disclosure: I wrote PINGQueue, so I'm biased.
