---UPDATE---
Some of the links for this post are now dead. I am looking into valid links for the same information.
I am just going through my inbox and having interesting thoughts. This time I am actually opening all the spam. It seems there are some misconceptions about me...
I don't know about you but;
- In my entire life I have never had a problem with my "member" size and, having a background in math, I am amazed that "80%" of the male population is smaller than "average". The two males who are skewing that bell curve must need wheel barrels in order to walk around without stepping on it.
- Okay it has been a while and it looks like it will be an even longer while but I am confident it still works. Actually, if you witnessed the tent I awake under, you would be sure it works just fine. I have even mastered the art of doing a handstand for my first trip to the bathroom in the morning. Besides, I am not too keen on buying prescription drugs from some one who can't spell. (If you are thinking of adding "viagra" to your keywords filter don't bother just load these.)
- I am happy with the amount of debt I have. I do not want a loan or a charge card. I want to work hard and pay it off honestly and fairly
- I doubt Bill Gates is going to share his wealth with me. I do not think he is into that and if he did could we just call it "monopoly" money?
- I do not own a home nor a car and have no immediate need to insure a mountain bike.
- I do not wish to help you transfer money from overseas. Spend it there. I am sure the third world country that so recently and tragically lost their monarch would love the economic boost. I will pass on my part of the fortune to benefit the cause.
- I do not have some long lost rich relative. Trust me I am a descendant of the working class middle class to poor. We have lived, for generations, in the poorest city in the country.
- I am flattered by the fact that women everywhere except where I live have the hots for me. I am somewhat perplexed as to why none of them live near me and they seem to move every time I relocate. (Since I began penning this, I have met someone. She is all I need thank you.)
- No wait... Here is one, "M33t me now. I L1ve ne4r U"... oh n/m... need a charge card for that one... hmm... maybe I can tutor her on spelling and barter?
Yeah, I am talking spam here. It seems everywhere. Fact is it IS everywhere and it is likely here to stay.
How bad is it? It is real bad. According to the book, Black Hat by John Biggs, spam will account for 63 percent of all e-mail traffic and there were 15 million spam emails on Valentines Day alone.
So what can one do? Well that depends on a number of things. One thing for sure though, SPAM is here to stay. If you are looking for this article to be the total and complete solution, don't bother reading any further. Until we come up with some other means of electronic messaging, we are going to have to accept some SPAM. The current e-mail format and system is just too easy to abuse. That is the fact of the matter. We must look at it like some type of radiation and figure out how to get the minimum dose possible. That is what I am going to write spam. Limiting it. I am sorry but some spam will always get through.
The Basic Common Sense Minimum
- Never respond to spam. It is more likely that all you are doing is letting them know your e-mail address is good. Once you verify that your e-mail address is good, odds are you will be spamed more and sold off to other spam companies. I am aware that none of these tactics are "legal" but, if you think anything other than what is described above, you are living naively.
- Never post your e-mail on a website. There are programs running around the web looking for email addresses. They are harvesting them. When I was a total n00b to web design, I made the mistake of doing just that on a Geocities web site. The site has been gone for 4 years. The e-mail address currently receives about 600-800 spam messages a day. I emptied the inbox on the account 4 hours ago and as of this instant it has 264 spams in it.
- Use another e-mail address in news groups and forums. Use one you do not care to drop if need be. Spam was born in newsgroups. Safe bet a listed addy will be harvested.
-
Be leery of who you give your e-mail address to. Always read the privacy policy of sites and such BEFORE you give them your e-mail addy. Be especially leery of phrases like "receive e-mails with special offers", "receive e-mails regarding product updates" and even "newsletter". If they ask you if you would like to receive information and special offers and you check yes, you are either very unwise or very lonely.
It is also a good idea to use a separate e-mail addy for newsletters and such. If the organization is legit, you can always change the subscription address later. - NEVER buy anything advertised in spam. It would make about as much sense as continuing to pay your cell phone bill for months after it is ripped off. I don't care how good the deal is don't encourage them.
All of the items mentioned above will help, but none of them are really "protection", for that you need some type of filtering. There are several methods to filter and how you filter is dependent on a number of things. In this blog, I will cover what you can do from your PC. In the future, I will blog about what you can do if you have server access.
Using Web Based E-mail Only
If you do not use software on your PC to manage your e-mail then you are using web-based e-mail. If you do not have access to the actual server via command line or some type of interface then you are at the mercy of what your e-mail provider offers. Most services such as hotmail, yahoo and g-mail offer some type of filtering and a degree of control available to the user. As far as how to use this to lighten your spam burden, check with your service provider.
As far as what I have tried and like hotmail has been one of my standards for years and their bulk mail feature works pretty darn good. I recently was invited to gmail (thanks Gnimsh.) and I have yet to get a single spam. (This is only my fifth week with the account though.) From what I have heard about gmail, it is great. (If you know me, you have my email address and can get an invite from me if you wish. If you do not know me, sorry.)
Short of what I have just told you, there is not much you can do other than the above if all you use is web based e-mail. The next level of protection would be to use some type of software either on your own server or on your PC. I will cover Windows based software only and discuss that first.
PC based Software
First of all there are, I am certain, hundreds of different programs out there to combat spam. I am not attempting to write a book on this matter. (Although due to my long-winded nature, it may well seem that way.) I am far from an expert on this subject and have no need to become one. I am also not going to spend a horrible amount of time looking into this matter. I don't need to.
The truth of the matter is that I know whom to ask. If you are going to use software to deter spam, you do need to know just a few things. There are basically two types of software out there. There are those that work off of some type of list and their are those that use an algorithm and "learn". We could actually categorize them a bit further if we wished.
There are basically two types of list options;
- There are black list which block any member of the list. Often these programs update from some service on the web. The disadvantage of this option is that you will need to frequently update the list or let it update via a service on the web. Spammers often disguise their e-mails and change addresses frequently so either your service need be good or plan on being very busy. Cloudmark Spamnet is one such program and service. They offer their software for free and their service on a thirty day trial. The service then cost 3.99 a month. I think it is money well spent.
- The other list option is a white list. I know you will all be amazed when I tell you that it is just the opposite of a black list. It allows only those on the list. This is, of course, most efficient and will definitely block all the spam. It also means that you must maintain your own list for I doubt there are many services, which will update it on your behalf. (prersonalsecratary.com?) It also means that when Uncle Joe Jim Bob, who's email is j.jim.bob@whitetrash.com, meets Mrs. Trailer Right, who's e-mail is IWannaBeABarbie@fatchance.com, and changes his name to Uncle Joe Jim Bob Billy Jean, with a new e-mail J.JimNailsBarbie@delusion.net and sends you an e-mail from their new address, you will be completely unaware of it. (I am not saying this would necessarily be bad.)
The black white thing is basically how a list works. It could look for certain words in the subject line, the body and/or the address or anywhere else for that matter. The main problem with list type filters is that they, regardless of black or white, are only as good as the list. The list must be accurate and current. Your protection is only as good as your list. As far as PC side software goes, I use cloudmark. This, combined with hotmail's built in protection seems to work very well. As far as emails on my domain, my server has Spam Assassin. I will cover server side spam protection in another blog.
The other type of software is that which uses Bayesian Filters. This means that the software looks for certain characteristics within the e-mail and identifies it by an analysis based on that. To find out a bit more on how these work, you can read here. This is a nice option and there are several programs, which operate on just such a principle. K9 is one such program which several people well in the know recommended to me. K9 is free which is Lumpy's favorite price. Mailwasher is supposed to also be very good but is not a free program (which, if you know Lumpy, means it is outside of my current budget). Tucows recommends spamfighter and it is free for personal use. Spamfighter will, however, sell itself in a signature in all your outgoing e-mails.
There are also a few other things to consider for e-mail spam protection. One is the software you use to actually check your e-mail. I am guilty of using Outlook Express and rely on plugins to fix things. I am told, however, that the built in spam filter protection in Thunderbird is supposed to be great. Being the IRC addict I am, I have been informed by many that it is all they need.
There is also another program, which I personally like. Although it is no longer in development nor supported by the vendor Bounce Spam Mail is a rather creative alternative to getting off spam lists. The way this program works is you cut and paste information into it's windows and hit send. The program creates a fake bounce message and sends it back to the source. IF it gets there, it MIGHT convince the spamer that your address is bad and you might be removed from the list.
There are also a number of organizations which you can use to report spam to. Many of them offer spam-filtering services as well. One of the better known is Spamcop, another which has a server based list that I use is The Spamhaus Project and a third is CAUCE.
There are other programs and organizations out there. These are ones I know of from either personal experience or reference by someone who knows what they are talking about. I hope this blog was helpful to you. You may contact me at dummie694 if you have any suggestions. (And I know, I just broke the first rule but that e-mail is just for errors, corrections and suggestions. If someone spams me there it is, first, heavily filtered and, second, I just ban the IP from my server. Unfortunately, I must allow some method of communication with those of you who read my stuff.)

hmm yeah so as you ask me to submit my email adress to your site (thus exposing it to those evil "programs running around the web looking for email addresses") and that after you have just told me to "Never post your e-mail on a website" (and the Never was underlined I must mention)... well... either way never mind... I just thought I'd mention the fact that I have recieved the M$ will give you lots of $$ several times already and if you think about it the likelyhood that others have too is rather high and further the likelyhood that many-a-others have recived it at least once even greater... Even though it's Bill Gates and all... His recources are still scarce as the economists delight to say... in other words what my hungover brain is trying to say: Billy don't have da loop to pay all ya broke asses he doin't so HA! there you have it and now all Spamers go dig ahole in the ground crawl in it and die! I mean serious guys! You would do us all a favor and everybody would love you for it (as opposed to now where everybody -and that most likely includes your family- hates you...) YES! DEATH AND DESTRUCTION TO SPAMERS! Its like with rockcocaine man... it doesnt help to outlaw the drug and it doesn't help to treat the crackwhore... it's the dealer you need to shoot that bitch! YES! HEAT THE OVENS BACK UP! WE HAVE SPAMERS TO GAS! And don't forget to videotape it either... I want proof they are all dead and we need to show those after us how to deal with the threats of a new digital world in effective analog manners... (Gasing is analog for it is a rather timeconsuming and even more importantly progressive process as oposed to the rather digitallyoriented approach of shooting the spamer in his sikko-twisted-viagra-popping brain which if you think about it is a mater of first on and then off... so anyways where was I? Ohh yes... document it! Videotape it! I want to see the fukkers die that force me to reguarely switch my email adresses... Yes! I am a sick twisted fuck! I know but don't even try to convinvce me that the first time around when u realized that you lost your email address due to 500+ useless compositions and rearangements of the word Viagra you did not want to kill someone...
On this notion have a nice day. I am hungover and life sucks because I am work but thats a whole different story that I don't really want to talk about right now... I mean serious... don't you hate that? You are out drinking with your friends and all of a sudden you realize: holy shit!!! I gotta work tomorrow... So of corse to wash away the dreadfull prospect you drink even more only to discover that it is already way past 3 and you have to be up in 3 hours so you can be there on time, which of corse you are not resulting in your psychotic overweight bitch of a boss yeling at you (meanwhile you'r just standing there thinking STOP YELLING!). And I mean she had better stop yelling. For one that high pitched frequency kinda noise helps neither your headache nor your motivethics (thus I am now here typing of my rant on a friends blog instead of doing something else more joboriented) and for two it makes you want to vomit all over her shoes which coincedentally already tend to look like the vomit of someone who has had alot of pink food. So anyway there you are it is fucking nine in the morning you havent had coffe yet for you are late for work as it is and the fucking fat fucking whale is joined by this minifucking hitler type character that is commonly reffered to as assistant manager. Have you ever noticed? They are all the same man... I mean serious... it's like they make these dudes in a factory somewhere they all have that depressed-psycho-goddamn-Im-40-years-old-and-know -ain't-goin-nowhere-in-life-look with the fake satin shirt manufacutured somewhere in Taiwan by the same ten year old they paid for on their last vacation because after the third good christian child the wife said: NO MORE! (Wow man... Im angry today...) So anyways those mini fucking Hitlers... it's like they make em in a factory somewhere for the one and only purpose of making your given this morning fairly miserable life even more miserable. So let's see here, let me do a brief sumary... all spammers should be gassed and I think my Boss is Hitler... wow... those are two really ointresting (god, this keyboard sucks!) extremes we have here. But come to think of it extreme-ism seems to be the new fab amoungst Highschoolkids nowadays... everythink is extreme, but let me tell you what is really extreme... a person that drops for the first time and has never done drugs before. Yes man! I had the honors of seeing that happen the other day. So this kid... about 17 or so... yeah... maybe I shouldnt go there... thats against the law, I think so I guess I now actually am going to leave you alone and if you have read all the way up to here and have cookies in your house then go get a cookie... you deserve it.... thank you have a nice day.
