Odd thing that I live on IRC eh? Oh and yeah, I DO hear about it from time to time, er... actually daily... bout "how I live on the internet". This type of statement usually comes from the sort that tend to live life reclined in front of the tele... And they think "I" am wasting my time. Let me tell you a bit about why I am the way I am with it....
It all started with just one "channel", er that would be room to those of you who are total "n00bs" and/or brainwashed by AOL (which in my opinion truly means America Off Line). It started with a rather bizarre affiliation to a certain HTML daily newsletter... Well, not an affiliation... An addiction.
The channel was and is lockergnome. I am very fortunate for a certain op rather took a liking to me. Hmm... no, considering this op, it is better put that a certain op did not take a disliking to me. He, rather quickly, beat the n00b right out of me in several areas.
Now, due to the fact that I did not ask permission, I do not intend to mention this ops name or anything like that... I won't even hint at it... heh
In either case, this chance encounter with CP and this certain op really got the hook into me for IRC. It grew to even more channels and, now, I am, even starting to hit multiple networks.
Things do change. I am no longer a subscriber to the lockergnome HTML dailies. I simply get them RSS now. Spam has murdered the legit HTML publishers.
Some things do not change. My IRC habit has actually gotten far worse. I now have three monitors hooked up to my PC. Mainly because of my IRC habit...
Why? I feel that IRC is my best resource. One well placed question is like a thousand google searches. Furthermore, if it is in regards to code or software, you can curtail "finding out" whether software or code ideas are good or not... Someone will know... Someone will know good software... Someone will know how to write it right...
This is true for; hardware, getting rid of spyware, XHTML, JAVA, php, CGI, you name it... That is why I am addicted... Plus the people who hang out in these channels are kool. Below is some of the stuff and people I have discovered recently.
First off I wish to give a shout out to and kudos a really nice looking site, B´s Forum, with some great links on error code. Now I know where to go to find the list of error links I lost long ago. Bookmark it all... You will need those links someday.
I must also give a kudo to, usrbingeek who not only has a great web site with a killer list of links but also for his recommendation on cloudmark which is a really great anti-spam program. It is not freeware but it is not something one should do with out. For 3.99 a month, it will pay for its self in the time I save hitting the delete button.
And, yes, I do actually search the web for things on my own. Just because I am an IRC junkie does not mean I do not know how to google. My mobile E-life has been a real charming issue. I love my USB drives and they sure help but there is this issue of my 400+ bookmarks. I needed something mobile and compatible with both Firefox and "Internet Exploder". I tried several, and despite the use of frames (optional), I confess to liking MyBookmarks.com . It is simple enough to use and I can use the import/export feature just fine with my FireFox on my home PC
And speaking of my IRCholism, I have had a real hard time going mobile with that. Presently at the campus, the Wyldryde IRC applet works fine. I usually access it from the code I have pasted into my IRC page" which will take you directly to my channel. Either route works well... That is if IS&T installed JAVA on the machine. In other words, it works about half the time.
I have also been using Geek´s CGI script for IRC. This neat little script is available at cgiirc . For now, I have been using it off of Geek´s site here. (Sorry folks, the link is now dead.)
And yes, I am an IRC whore. So what? Do you know what else I discovered this week? Check out this great suggestion from bozodog... A perfect free program for you weather needs. Weather Pulse recommended by bozodog who is also a dog lover of #naughtycloset acquaintance. #naughtycloset is one of the newer and more visited channels on the Wyldryde IRC net it is the brain child of a certain creative witty nic, although be warned, she rivals even I for nicks...
As for why am I an IRC junkie? Where the heck to you think I hear bout all the neat geeky stuff you all think I know so much about? You think I actually have the time to google all of that? Not to mention that it is way more productive and social than sitting around some tele... It is fun and you discover some neat things.
Anyhow, I need to go. Almost all my channel windows are flashing now. CYA
