I have made the claim many times that people are not pirating movies and music to break the law but they do so because the current distribution method sucks and is obsolete.

An article over at Torrent Freak does some quick and dirty math and comes to a not so surprising conclusions.
- Contrary to what the MPAA would like you to believe, Netflix is responsible for more Internet traffic than torrents. This means that legal on-line distribution is greater more prevalent than piracy.
- Granted the author made some assumptions with the calculations but Hollywood pays more in fees to the MPAA than it loses to piracy.
While the author at Torrent Freak makes some assumptions and reaches a bit, I still think it makes much more sense than comparing the VCR to Jack the Ripper and claiming that The Internet Archive is a haven for illegal activity.
